AI Needs EI: It’s About the People

In November of 2022 when OpenAI launched ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), a technology that lets users ask questions and receive humanlike responses, many early adopters and influencers were quick to try it out and use it in their work.

When it comes to technology,  I’m one of those middle-majority adopters. I want others to check it out and work out all the bugs before I get into it. So, I just recently put it to the test, spurred on by a colleague who described how it was helpful to him.

I’d been working on projects for several clients over the past few days, and in addition to researching and developing my own material, I entered various commands to see what it produced. The results were amazing! (more…)

Breaking News! On June 6th the PGA Tour and Saudi backed LIV Golf announced an agreement to merge. For anyone whose head may have been buried in a sand trap, this was a stunning announcement of an alliance between the decades-old organizer of golf in the U.S. and North America, and the year-old start up that paid hundreds of millions of dollars to woo big name pro golfers to defect from the PGA.

The two organizations spent the better part of a year in an acrimonious legal battle that included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, former PGA golfers, antitrust allegations, and more. The startling agreement “effectively makes the Saudis investors in U.S. golf…” according to the Wall Street Journal.1 (more…)

“Belief in what someone can do is more powerful than knowledge of what they can do.”

This is a quote from my friend and colleague Dr. Lee Meadows. I read it and chuckled as I thought about a significant accomplishment on the part of my niece, Carolyn DesJardin.

As a millennial, military spouse, mother of two preschoolers and federal security project manager, she embarked on an ambitious project last summer while in the throes of the pandemic. She decided to build a camper. Never mind that she had zero experience in anything associated with doing this. She needed a COVID-19 safe project to work on and wanted to start camping again, something she and her husband had put on hold after the kids came along. It was also a decision to regain a measure of control over her family’s ability to move about. So, she researched the idea and purchased a 30-year-old pop-up camper, tore it down to the frame and rebuilt it using wood and fiberglass, with a pop top, and outfitted with a queen and bunk beds. You and your team are stuck and find it difficult to break through to the next level of innovation and advancement. How do you move forward? You need a new perspective. You need to look at the challenge from a different angle, using a different lens, with a fresh set of eyes.

Unfortunately, too often we waste time pressing forward working on a solution just to show activity, while in reality we’re making minimal headway. A more effective use of our time is to proactively take specific steps to gain a different perspective. Six Steps to Collaborative Problem Solving

Many years ago, when I began my career in human resources, a colleague gave me a piece of valuable advice. He told me that when working with our business partners, I should avoid being a “no” person, but instead find ways to say “yes.”

Now, you must understand the context of this conversation. There were times when our business partners would make what I call “end” requests. That means when the business partner had a problem, they decided what action needed to be taken, then came to us and told us what to do. Obviously, in our humble yet expert opinion, their solution wasn’t the appropriate way to resolve the issue. Our partners weren’t necessarily trying to be difficult, or to violate policies or procedures, they simply wanted a quick resolution that fit their expectations. As HR professionals, the temptation for us, at least periodically, was to take charge of the situation and to do the proper thing. But the better result always included collaborating with them in understanding how to assess the problem and in finding the best solution. (more…)
