This is not about team members complaining.

Instead…there’s an intriguing phenomenon among starlings, a small to medium sized bird with glossy black feathers streaked with green and purple. In fall or winter, just before sundown, tens of thousands, even up to a hundred thousand, gather and fly through the sky. And instead of flying straight in a flock like most other birds, they twist and turn continuously, moving band and forth, dancing in elaborate shapes, creating a beautiful and mesmerizing show in the air. I recently returned from a seven-day vacation cruising the Caribbean with 2200 of my closest friends (well four really). The entire ship was filled with opportunities to listen to smooth jazz music all day long and into the wee hours of the morning. Establishing an Environment for Growth

There’s an old parable about a man who planted seed.

He tossed some of the seed on rocky ground. Little plants peeped out of the ground, but because there wasn’t much soil, they died away without much growth.

He tossed other seed on the ground that was covered with thorns. But the seed couldn’t settle into any dirt because the thorns choked them out.

He then tossed some seed on ground that was hardened because it was a pathway. This seed simply laid on top of the hard ground, which made it easy for the birds to come and feast on.

Finally, the man tossed some seed on good soil that was soft, watered, and full of nutrients needed for growth. The seed sprouted and produced a sun-kissed harvest. Some of it was thirty, sixty and one hundred times greater than what was planted!

The moral of the story? It’s important to establish the right environment for growth. (more…)

Prides, Herds and Teams: The Value of Working Together

How well can you accomplish your goals by working alone?

Scrolling through my newsfeed recently, I came across an intense video of animals in the bush, fighting for survival.

In it, a herd of 20 to 30 buffalo rounded the bend in the path, their hooves thundering on the well-worn dusty ground as they approached their watering hole. Suddenly they stopped in their tracks, the blowing dust settling around them. They came face to face with a pride of lionesses, 6 or 7 of them, hungry and looking for their next meal. The fact that one buffalo was more than twice their size was unimportant to the lionesses. These large mammals are typical prey for the pride, as they had hungry cubs and several male lions to feed. Their goal was to isolate one animal from the others, then pounce as a group, using their powerful jaws to deliver a decisive strike to the throat, and thereby suffocate the buffalo.

The standoff began with each group eyeing one another. The buffalo knew this routine and they knew they had strength in numbers. Several buffalo at the front of the herd took turns rushing forward a few yards to butt the lionesses, more of an offensive measure than really trying to jump on them. The lionesses responded in kind, crouching, half pouncing, looking for an angle to get in between a lone buffalo and the rest of the herd.

The buffalo could only survive by working as a team. Similarly, the pride of lionesses’ only hope of finding dinner was to operate as a team. On this day, the buffalo won. Their supportive strategy worked, and they made it safely to their watering hole.  (more…)

As a leader, the “buck” for certain decisions stops with you. You’re responsible for outcomes impacting your team, your organization, your career, your family and friends. Sometimes the choice is clear, but frequently, it’s not. Ambiguities are the norm, and while there is pressure to make fast decisions, you know that it’s more important to make timely decisions. Meanwhile, stakeholders press you because they have their own motivations and need to know how your decision impacts them.

Good decision-making isn’t based on the quantity of information you’re able to review, but on the quality of information you’re able to comprehend and process to the right conclusion. Good decision-making brings together intuition and systems understanding of the many networks impacted by the choices you make. It incorporates intellectual agility to draw conclusions from a broad array of facts and data to reach desired outcomes, with the political savvy to navigate varied perspectives and power dynamics. Thus, decision-making is not only a science but an art.

Dares are common among children at play. They dare each other to do something outlandish or out of the norm. But these same children may grow up and lose the nerve to take on some dares, because the societal repercussions are significantly greater as an adult.

Differences are necessary in providing complementary traits to create a fully functioning system. The human body is comprised of many different internal and external parts, each with their own specific purpose, that follow the brain to perform smoothly. A symphony is comprised of many different sounding instruments, some with significant parts and others with smaller parts, each eliciting a beautiful sound, when properly following the conductor and the music.

In the same way, each of us bring differences to our teams and organizations. We each may function in seemingly important ways, or in miniscule and replaceable ways, but nonetheless are each vital to the overall success of a team. Failure to share your full value with the team, may result in missing an opportunity for innovation, inability to meet clients’ needs, or overlooking costly design flaws. As leaders, it’s important to prioritize the growth and development of each team member’s differences to draw out their value to the broader organization.

I had a stark reminder of this while watching a recently released movie, Concussion, starring Will Smith, which followed the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist who discovered a neurological deterioration similar to Alzheimer’s disease in the brains of deceased pro-football players. He named this chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and published it in a medical journal. Faced with public denial of his findings, he worked to raise consciousness about the long term risks of football-related head trauma.
